چکیده

Geographical variations in biological diversity are known to be driven by a number of biotic and abiotic factors. These include environmental gradients (climate and habitat) and the physical characteristics of each site or region (e.g. area, isolation, habitat diversity and topographic and landscape heterogeneity), in addition to regional processes and historical events, which determine the characteristics and evolutionary history of the species present in the regional pool (e.g. Ricklefs, 1987, 2007; Rahbek & Graves, 2001; Hawkins et al., 2003; Hortal et al., 2008). However, most current knowledge on diversity gradients is based on the study of variations in species richness and, to a lesser extent, a few morphological and ecological Division of Biology, Imperial College London, Silwood Park Campus, Ascot, Berkshire SL5 7PY, UK, Departamento de Ciências Agrárias – CITA-A (Azorean Biodiversity Group), Universidade dos Açores, Rua Capitão João de Ávila, 9700-042 Angra do Heroı́smo, Portugal, Department of Entomology, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD, UK, Centre for Population Biology, Imperial College London, Silwood Park Campus, Ascot, Berkshire SL5 7PY, UK, Departamento de Biodiversidad y Biologı́a Evolutiva, Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (CSIC), C/José Gutiérrez Abascal 2, 28006 Madrid, Spain

Patterns of Nestedness in Remote Polynesian Ant Faunas (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

The entire ant faunas of remote Polynesian islands consist of introduced species. An important question concerning the assembly of Pacific island ant faunas is whether these species are a random assortment of the available species pool, or whether they exhibit highly ordered occurrence patterns (i.e., nested subsets of species). I evaluated nestedness for the ant faunas of two island groups in ...

Taxonomic Position of Iranian Isolates of Eretmocerus mundus (Merect), a Parasitoid of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius)

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is one of the most important pest of vegetable and fruit crops. This polyphagous pest has a range of natural enemies including the parasitoid Eretmocerus mundus (Merect) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). To determine the molecular profile and taxonomic status of Iranian isolates of E. mundus, parasitized B. tabaci samples were collected from cotton...

Cascading extinctions, functional complementarity, and selection in two-trophic-level model communities: a trait-based mechanistic approach.

The influence of diversity on ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services is now well established. Yet predictive mechanistic models that link species traits and community-level processes remain scarce, particularly for multitrophic systems. Here we revisit MacArthur's classical consumer resource model and develop a trait-based approach to predict the effects of consumer diversity on cascading...

Ecological classification of southern intertidal zones of Qeshm Island, based on CMECS model

The “Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS)”, a new approach to ecological classification, was applied to 122 km of the southern intertidal zone of Qeshm Island located the Hormouz Strait - the Persian Gulf. Two components of this model, Surface Geology (SGC) and Biotic Cover (BCC) were used. Considering the extent and geomorphological alternations of the covered area, 12...

بیولوژی مگس پارازیتویید سن معمولی گندم [Phasia subcoleoptrata L.(Dipt. Tachinidae)] درمنطقه اصفهان

In order to study the parasitoid flies of Sunn pest in Isfahan, this research was conducted during the years 1997-1998. The results indicated that the dominant species of parasitoid fly is Phasia subcoleoptrata L. This species has two generations per year and over winters as pupae in soil under the shrubs of aestivation and hibernation places of Sunn pest and remains there until the following s...
